My 5 Goals for 2020

I have never been a huge goal person. I mean I have some goals in my head, but I have never written them down and kept track of progress, but I’ve set some goals for 2020.

This year I am going to try something new. I’ve read so many statistics about how writing down your goals makes you more likely to achieve them, so I thought I would give it a go.

My Goals for 2020

Stop Comparing Myself to Others

My number one goal for 2020 is to stop comparing myself to others. This is going to be the most difficult goal for me to reach. It’s probably more realistic to say my goal is to compare myself to others LESS this year than I have in the past.

I have noticed recently that a lot of the decisions I make are based on how others will see me and how it will compare to others. I need to realize that everyone is in different places in their lives and I don’t need to be competing with everyone around me.

I need to focus on myself and my husband what makes us happy and what our personal goals are. I can’t have my friends lives dictate the decisions I make in my own. They can’t control my happiness. I need to let go of the idea of looking at the people around me and striving to be like them. I need to strive for what will truly make ME and my family happy.

Eat Out Less/Meal Plan More

My husband and I eat lunch out EVERYDAY that we work. That’s insane! Between the two of us we spend less than $10 usually, which is $50 a week or less. At the end of the year that equals about $2500!

We are going to try to meal plan more so that we can bring leftovers to work for lunch. Neither of us are big sandwich fans, so bring our own lunch has been difficult because we need to plan ahead.

We are going to try to start meal planning and making bigger portions of meals, so we have leftovers. If we have leftovers, that creates an easy option when thinking about packing a lunch.

Pay Off 15% of My Mortgage

This is a pretty lofty goal, but even if I don’t reach 15%, any extra paid off at the end of the year will mean less interest that I pay overall.

My husband and I have two mortgages, one for our home and one for our old home that we now rent out. We want to pay off one mortgage as fast as possible, to really make the rental worthwhile financially and to reduce debt.

We plan to cut other expenses elsewhere this year and put that extra money toward the mortgage, like the money we save from not buying lunch everyday. I also wrote another article about how to save money on electricity and another on how to save on groceries. The money we save with those tips can be put straight toward the mortgage instead!

Post 52 Blog Posts

I started this blog in October and was posting twice a week. I stopped posting in December because I got so busy with the holidays.

This year I plan to post once a week. If I have time and fit in more, then that’s awesome. In order to reduce stress and pressure I am only going to hold myself to one per week for now.

With the way I worded the goal, I’m aiming for 52 posts overall so if I miss a week or two I can make it up later and still accomplish the goal.

Drink More Water

This one seems a little silly to me, but it’s SO important. Over the last two years, I’ve noticed that I’ve started drinking a lot more soda and a lot less water.

I really like the carbonation of soda, but hate the taste of most carbonated waters. They taste bitter or something to me. I just don’t like them, so I’ve stuck to soda.  I also don’t like coffee so soda gives me caffeine that water doesn’t.

I got a new glass cup with a straw that I hope will motivate me to drink more water. I just need to make a conscious effort every day. Last year there were often days where I wouldn’t even drink ONE glass of water!

Hopefully just making it a thought and putting an effort in to drink even one to two glasses a day will make a difference. I’m hoping that I will feel a noticeable difference in how I feel, which will help to encourage the change.

I hope that I can work on these throughout the year and make progress. I hope to feel accomplished at the end of the year, rather than defeated. I tend to be too hard on myself (see goal #1). I think writing them down will definitely help me and will provide a constant reminder for me throughout the year.
